Club History

Yamba Breakers Football Club

1985

The inaugural meeting of the Yamba Soccer Club was held on 13th March 1985.

Public interest was at a high and provided enough members to field six junior teams.

The dedication and hard work of both Vic White (president ’85-‘’89) and Margaret and Gary Anderson (secretary, treasurer, registrar, etc. ’85-’98) were elementary to the club’s survival and subsequent growth in its formative years.

1991

Soon the club attained Minor Premierships, Carnaval Victories, Representation in regional squads and was selected to host the U/14 State Soccer Titles in 1991.

By 1992 Yamba Soccer Club had established itself as a formidable Juniors Club.

The loss of juniors reaching 17 years of age to other clubs, sports and codes made it obvious that Yamba Soccer needed a Seniors team to offer Junior players at least a ‘One Club’ start to their playing career , if not a total ‘One Club’ career.

1993

The Yamba Soccer Club formed a Seniors team to play in the CRSA Night competition

Terry Wratten, already instrumental in coaching the Yamba Juniors, was appointed as Player Coach. Playing in Hillside outfits, in it’s first year Yamba were Minor Premiers and Grand Final winners. The following year was plagued by injury and low player numbers. There was no third year. Whilst Yamba Soccer continued to increase junior player numbers and competition success, the need for a seniors team remained evident.

1998

The Yamba Soccer Club registered the first official Seniors team, Yamba Breakers, in the CRSA competition.

Terry Wratten was again appointed Captain/Coach/Manager. Yamba Seniors enjoyed a fantastic first year, reaching the semi-finals, whilst Yamba Juniors were selected to host the U/13 State Soccer Titles.

1999

The Yamba Breakers win the Grand Final in the CRSA Saturday Open competition with a convincing 6-1 win over minor premiers Wooli.

Many Yamba juniors, both girls and boys, were selected for Representative Teams as well as regional Development Squads.

2000

The Yamba Soccer Club was an integral part of the Clarence River Soccer Association.

The Yamba Juniors were achieving numerous Minor and Major Premierships victories with player numbers increasing annually.

2002

The Club welcomed Peter Hickey as senior player/coach, who steered the Yamba Seniors to Grand-Final victories in the CRSA Saturday Open competition in 2003 (3-1 win over Grafton Gunners) and again in 2005 (3-2 win over Maclean Bobcats).

2006

The formation of the NORTH COAST FOOTBALL (formerly Holiday Coast Soccer and Grafton River Soccer) with its base in Coffs Harbour.

The newly formed association now covered the area between Macksville, Dorrigo and Iluka, presenting clubs like Yamba with difficulties covering the long distances.

2007

Yamba Seniors were able to enter two Senior teams (2nd and 3rd division) in the NCF Saturday competitions.

Both teams fell short of semi-final contention but in 2008 both teams won their minor semi-finals in penalty shoot-outs, only to bow out at the major semis.

2008

In December Yamba Soccer Club Inc. changed it’s name to Yamba Football Club Inc.

The club welcomed the arrival of Mick Brooker as the new senior’s player/coach.

Mick’s visions and subsequent efforts and commitment saw the Yamba breakers become serious contenders in all divisions and age groups for an extended period of time.

2009

Yamba Breakers enjoyed an outstanding year in 2009 with the 2nd division team taking out the minor premiership without a single loss and winning the Grand Final at the Coffs Harbour International Football Stadium 2-1 over the Sawtell Scorpions.

The 3rd division team fall short of a semi-final berth. Yamba Football Club’s 2009 success lead to the club’s entry in the 2010 NCF’s Premier division.

This necessitated the formation of a ‘Youth” team (formerly known as “Reserves”) in support of the Premier team. Yamba also entered a 3rd division team, finishing just short the of semi-finals.

Whilst the youth team performed admirably with a mid-ladder finish, the Yamba Premiers were at the receiving end of week to week losses, resulting in a 'wooden spoon' finish.

2011

The Yamba Breakers returned to NCF’s 2nd and 3rd division competitions with one 2nds team and two 3rd division teams. More silverware was added to the Trophy Cabinet with a win in both the 2nd and 3rd divisions’ Grand-Final.

NCF became aware of the large distances covered by visiting teams each week and re-instated a Southern Zone (Coffs Harbour area) and a Northern zone (Grafton area) with an end of season Zone Championship final between the two zone’s minor premiership winners.

2012

The Yamba Breakers senior and competitive junior teams (ages 12 to 16) have each year taken out a mixture of Minor Premierships, Grand-Finals and Zone finals.

2017

A Yamba Women’s team was formed in 2017. In their first year The Yamba Ladies performed extremely well with the limited number of registered players, bowing out in the Major Semis and taking out the prestigious “Oceania Cup” in Alstonville FC’s annual blue ribbon event.

Reaching a well-deserved Grand-Final berth against the Maclean Topcats in 2018 and fielding a very competitive team in the 2019 competition, the Yamba Football Club was sadly unable to field a ladies team in 2020.

2019

The first year of our new Major Sponsor:  Bowlo Sports & Leasure Yamba.

After a 15-year hiatus in the Bowlo-YFC relationship, both clubs welcomed the rebirth of this mutually fortuitous sponsorship arrangement.

2020

In spite of COVID-19, the NCF association managed to come up with near-normal competitions in most divisions.

Yamba Breakers had another outstanding year with all the competitive age groups and divisions reaching the semi-finals, and the 15s and Mens 2nd division finishing Premiers.

All but the Mens 3rd division reached the Grand Finals with the 15s and 16s being victorious.
